Hi Folks,

Our 1998 M20J Allegro has fabric installed Speed Brakes from Precise Flight.

But only now we are getting some operating problems... The Speed Brakes don't open and close correctly anymore, and very often, they do not open at all, or they don't close totally.

After 2015 anual inspection, our Mechanic serviced them and said that some internal mechanic parts are detiorated. But he said that these parts can't be replaced... and that only a new set of Speed Brakes could be replaced...!!
I doubt of this opinion because I know that the electrical system, blades, etc, are all Good, and we obviously don't need to relace them. Probably, we only need to replace the bearings / mechanic parts...

Do you have any experience servicing Speed Brakes? Can you help and share with us your knowledeg on this issue?

Thanks!
Frederico

Hi, the problem are the gears, you can hear the electric motor running but no movement of the speed brake. I had one replaced on warranty, but then I disassembled both, and replaced one gear wheel (can be ordered at preciseflight.com/general-aviation/shop/speedbrakes/ (give them a call). The tolerances of the construction are too high, this is causing that the teeth of the gear wheel are just barely catching. By making some bolt holes a little larger you can adjust that the gears are catching each other over a larger area. The adjustment of the switches is a little tricky but can be done with the speed brake electrically hooked up hanging under the wing. Mine are now in for 15 years and never gave my any problems any more. Replacement of the unit is not necessary.
Good luck with the fix.

Hi !

Thanks for the precious information.

Previous to your reply, I already contacted Precise Flight and they said that I could send to them the pair of Speed Brakes in order to be fixed to "almost like new conditions for $600 to $1200, and within 4-7 days from arrival to ship them out".

After your comment I asked quotation only for a pair of Gears, and they replied with "$131,43 each", but the work repair at Precise Flight would "include a Mod to prevent this from happening again".

Obviously I will prefer to order the pair @ 262,86$ and do the bolt holes you suggest because I believe that it's the Mod that they are talking about.

Later I will tell you how it went the Fix. Hope with success :)

Cheers,
Frederico

Hi Frederico,
after several years of painful and expensive repairs I had this overhaul in January this year with Precise Flight.
The clutch on one site was fully gone and could not be fixed anymore. I decided to a full overhaul since the MOD is significant from my POV. The engine is better encapsulated what is important in combination with TKS. This was also the main driver in my eyes for a lot of issues with the speed breaks in the past. The modification also has better drains that helps a lot to keep the speed breaks clean. My overhaul was including new wirings and engines as well. The main cost drivers are the engines and labor. My total was $1000.82 with a much better Dollar rate in January.

Hi Guys,

I ordered a pair of Gears ($262.43 + $105.4 of shipping) to Precise Flight and received them today. Photo in attach.

Mooney Pilot 28,
Can you explain a little better where did you make the bolt holes in the Gears? (if possible draw it on the photo, please).

Thanks!
Frederico

Don't drill holes in the gears shown in the picture! Disassemble the speed brakes replace the gears and check how well the gear teeth catch each other, you will find brass cuttings indicating that the teeth of the gear wheels (as on the picture) were overloaded . This needs to be corrected by drilling larger holes in the red anodized plates that form the housing. Select those holes that hold the little motor with the worm gear. This enables you to adjust how well the worm gear teeth catch the gear wheel (in your picture). If this clearance is well adjusted, it will last forever. Don't forget to lubricate with grease. Also use some Loctite 637. Test the units electrical connected to the airplane, cycle the unit and adjust the micro switches, it is a little trial and error. The worm motor should only run during cycling and not when the speed brakes are in or out. Good luck!
